Nocturia: Symptoms and Treatment

Nicturia is a disease of the genitourinary system, the main symptom of which is the increased urge to urinate at night. People with this disease often go to the toilet at night, which is why sleep is disturbed, and a person feels tired and reduced in efficiency. It should be noted that speech about nocturia can go only when a person goes to the toilet at least 2 times at night, and for this there are no predisposing factors, such as an excessively drunk amount of fluid before going to bed.

This disease can occur in a person as a consequence of serious pathologies, but not always the increased allocation of urine at night is associated with diseases — sometimes the causes can be quite natural. In particular, people often go to the bathroom at night in the above case (when using a lot of liquid the night before), when taking certain medications, for example, diuretics.

In addition, frequent nighttime urination is often inherent in older people who have a lowered tonus of the musculature of the bladder. Often there is nocturia in elderly women — pathology develops due to a decrease in the tone of the pelvic floor muscles.

If we talk about the causes of nocturia, associated with the health of the patient, then they can be attributed:

  • diabetes;
  • kidney diseases such as pyelonephritis, glomerulonephritis, nephrosclerosis
  • Cystitis of various etiologies;
  • prostate adenoma in men
  • heart and kidney failure

Nocturia is an indicator of the inhibition of the concentration function of the kidneys. This indicates a violation in the human body of water-salt metabolism. Symptoms of the disease are as follows: a sick person at night feels frequent urge to urinate, after which there is a relief of the condition. In this case, often nocturia is combined with another pathology — polyuria, which is characterized by frequent urination to urinate at daytime and at night, as well as an increase in the volume of excreted urine.

At the same time, urination itself is painless, which makes it possible to distinguish this disease from other pathologies of the genitourinary sphere, including cystitis.

Due to the fact that the night sleep in the patient is broken, he develops other symptoms, in particular various mental disorders, namely:

  1. increased anxiety
  2. forgetfulness
  3. Irritability and short temper;
  4. a violation of the perception of reality.

Nocturia in children

Very often parents face such a sign of nocturia, like urinary incontinence at night (the baby is not able to wake up in time).

The causes of the appearance of nocturia in children are similar to adults, but they can also be associated with stress and nervous overexertion. All because children have an unformed nervous system, and any stress is accompanied by violations in the work of all organs and systems. And, although the treatment of nocturia in children will be similar to the treatment of illness in adults (as will be discussed below), nevertheless, it is necessary to exclude the psychological factor — to normalize the psychological background in the family and the collective where the child is learning.

Diagnosis of the disease is carried out by taking urine samples in Zimnitskiy. According to this analysis, the patient takes urine for analysis every day and every 3 hours, and at the end of the fence period, the day and night amount of urine allocated to him is determined. If the night volume prevails — talk about nocturia.

In addition, the trial according to Zimnitsky allows you to monitor the dynamics of the course of the disease during the treatment.

To get rid of such a pathology as nocturia, it is necessary to eliminate the causes that cause it. In particular, if pathology develops against the background of diseases of the urogenital system, treatment of the affected organ is required — in this case, antibiotics, herbal remedies and other drugs are indicated, which can only be selected by the attending physician.

When it comes to nocturia in men who have prostate adenoma, the appointment of antagonists of alpha1-adrenoreceptors or 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors is required. If nocturia in elderly women has developed due to weakness of the pelvic floor muscles, special gymnastics or surgical intervention is indicated. It is necessary to adhere to the appropriate diet during the treatment. It is worth noting that in a number of cases, only surgical intervention can save the patient from an exhausting disease.

Well-established folk remedies that allow to relieve the patient of diseases of the genitourinary sphere, and as a result — to save from nocturia. These are the means:

  • Pumpkin juice, which should be taken to men with enlarged prostate gland, once a day in a glass — for three weeks
  • a decoction of white birch leaves, suitable for both men and women, and which must be consumed half the glass several times a day;

  • An excellent anti-inflammatory effect on the pelvic organs is exacerbated by the decoction of parsley leaves on milk, which must be taken every hour.
