How many people are gays?

Statistical data about the number of people who are sexually attracted to the people of their own gender. First of all, statistical data about LGBT allows changing some social programs or to create new ones. For example, legalization of same-sex marriages or the projects allowing LGBT adoption. The number of gays and lesbians helps psychologists and sociologists to carry out different studies. The results of surveys help to determine the factors provoking an increased percentage of homosexual people in the society, possible influence of the state of mind of a certain group of population and some other reasons.

Accuracy of study results

It is quite difficult to count how many gays are there in the world. Whatever the method (most often surveys are used), it will not give accurate results.

Factors that make accurate data impossible:

  1. The respondents have to reveal personal information which they prefer to hide;
  2. People have different views and attitudes to a sexual act and homosexuality (as the results of studies show, a certain percentage of people do not think they are bisexuals though they had sex with people of the same gender several times);
  3. Analyzing the mentality of population, researchers can not say for sure what sexual orientation has a person even if he has all the factors to homosexualism;
  4. All research methods are subjective.

We can not find in a human brain a region responsible for homosexualism and for this reason, we have to rely on the results of surveys.

Survey results in different countries

  • Australia

The most extensive survey was carried out in Australia at the beginning of the 21st century. A phone survey continued for two years (2001-2002) among male population from 16 to 59 years old. The results of the survey showed that 1% of respondents defined his orientation as bisexual and 1.6% said they were homosexuals. Over 8% of men admitted that they had sex with a person of the same gender, ate least, once in their life. And more than a half of men who had some homosexual experience said that they were heterosexuals.

  • Canada

In 2003 researchers carried out a survey with 135 respondents. 1.3% called themselves homosexuals and 0.7% — bisexuals. The percentage of gays and bisexuals among men over 35 years old decreased and 2% of men from 18 to 35 years called themselves homosexuals.

In 1998 there were 750 male respondents in a survey. The age of the respondents varied from lawful age to 27 years old. The answers were assessed by 3 criteria: one-time voluntary sexual intercourse (starting since 12 years old), self-identification as a gay or a bisexual and same-sex relations during the last 6 months. The results show that over 15% of men can be regarded as homosexuals.

  • France

200 thousand people participated in a survey in 1992 and the results showed that around 4% of men had sex with a person of the same gender, at least, once in their life.

  • Great Britain

In Great Britain a survey was conducted in 1992 (there were near 8.5 thousand of male respondents). According to the survey, at least, 6% of respondents had sexual experience with a person of the same gender and 3.5% had several partners of the same gender.

  • The USA

In the USA around 3.5 thousand of respondents took part in a survey in 1992. The survey showed that during the last year 2.7% of men had same-gender sex and 5% had sex with a man, at least, once after reaching 18 years old.

  • Russia

To count up the number of gays in Russia is even more difficult than in other countries because people, legislative and political structures have an extremely negative attitude to sexual minorities.

The results of surveys showed that 20% of men give a negative answer and show the signs of aggression. On average, 2% of men admit that they are homosexuals.
